Champions League: Manchester City victory against Colchonéros

The first leg of the Champions League quarter-final went as planned. At the Etihad Stadium (England), the Manchester City team manages to find the way to the net after a dominance in terms of possession.

“The match was difficult,” said Kevin De Bruyne. Even if it was difficult, the citizens manage to win with a score of 1-0.

Here are the notable facts from the encounter between these two great European teams:

Atletico Madrid’s impenetrable low block defense
0 shots for visitors (Atletico de Madrid)
Kevin De Bruyne responds again: goalscorer in the 70th minute
Pep Guardiola’s winning change: Phil Foden came on in the 64th minute

Manchester City win 1-0

Since kick-off, Pep Guardiola’s men have mastered possession against the Atletico de Madrid team, which opts for a rather defensive composition. With a 5-5-0 formation, Diego Simeone’s men held out until half-time.

After returning from the locker room, there was not a big change. Just like in the first period, the Citizens continued to attack while the Atlético de Madrid players settled into their game as a whole.

It took Manchester City players 70 minutes to find the net. The young Englishman Phil Foden (entered the game in the 67th minute) found the fault in the Madrid defense and managed to make an assist to the Belgian Kevin De Bruyne. After the Citizen midfielder’s goal, Pep Guardiola’s men kept up the pace until the end of 90 minutes.

Atletico de Madrid under pressure

The visitor has been having problems since the start of the match. During the 90 minutes, Diego Simeone’s men failed to shoot Ederson’s goal.

Throughout the first period, Manchester City obtained a possession of the ball of 70% against 30% from Madrid.

During the game, Manchester City knew no hesitation, the Citizen players took control and attacked constantly. For this, the people of Madrid concentrated on defense and they did not manage to make a lesser attack in position.

Pep Guardiola’s men put pressure on the visiting team. Forwards such as Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and even midfielder Kevin De Bruyne caused several penalties but the referee did not call any

Kevin De Bruyne still decisive

A player who always responds to all major events, Kevin De Bruyne has shone again under the eyes of their supporters. The Blue Sky midfielder is very dangerous on his ball and his way of stopping the counter-attack of Diégo Simeone’s men.

In the 55th minute, Kevin De Bruyne forced Jan Oblak, Atletico de Madrid goalkeeper, to lie down to get a low shot.

With actions full of self-confidence and techniques on the pitch, the Belgian star finally managed to deceive the Colchoneros goalkeeper. In the 70th minute, Kevin De Bruyne scored the one and only goal of the match which puts Manchester City ahead for the return match in Spain.

At the end of the match, the Belgian rewarded his effort and he was elected man of the match.
